On Wednesday evening, 6th September, the Minden Band of the QUEEN’S DIVISION will be Beating Retreat in Oakham Market Place at 6.30pm.
Beating Retreat has its origins from the early years of organised warfare when the beating of drums and parading of Post Guards marked the closing of the gates at the camp and the lowering of the flags at the end of the day.
In 1690 an order from James II of England had his drums beating an order for his troops to retreat. Four years later in 1694 William III issued this later order
This year in Oakham the Minden Band will be playing. Admission is free and there will be a collection for the Army Benevolent Fund-ABF.
It is hoped that there will be a great attendance to this event and that everyone comes along to show their support for the members of the British Army.
