Free Parking in the Run Up to Christmas
Rutland County Council are hoping to be able to offer free parking in the run up to Christmas. Hopefully to support local shops and businesses by offering this incentive to shoppers.
The two hour free parking will only apply to the local council run carparks in Oakham and Uppingham. The offer will run throughout December and end on Thursday 31st December.
On-street parking restrictions and resident parking permits will remain unchanged an enforceable.
Councillor Lucy Stephenson, Cabinet Member for Highways said, “Businesses have really struggled this year because of the impact of COVID-19. Come the end of lockdown and subject to any further restrictions that may be announced by the government, we hope to offer two hours free parking in council-run public car parks. This would be to support shops and local retailers in both our market towns as they get ready for what we hope will be a great Christmas – albeit a very different one.”
I think it such a pity the council couldn’t extend the free parking from two hours to 3 hours. I’m sure this could have helped the service industry. Just a little more time for shoppers and their family to enjoy a meal or a nice hot drink. However 2 hours is better than nothing.
