Riding Karyn Shuter, Angela Hislop and Val Ryan’s 10-year-old gelding Ballaghmor Class, Oliver Townend was the eventual winner of this year’s Landrover Burghley Horse Trials.
This year’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials ended with a British 1, 2, and 3. 1st was Oliver Townsend riding Ballaghmor Class, 2nd was Piggy French riding Vanir Kamira and 3rd was Gemma Tattersall riding Arctic Soul.
Being in pole position overnight and going last in the showjumping next day, Oliver went into the final phase with a fence in hand which he used up when he was awarded 4 faults at the Gate (fence 5). He also picked up one time fault which didn’t matter as he stayed 1.3 points of his nearest competitor and runner up, Piggy French.
An emotional Oliver Townsend said “It’s very, very special winning here at Burghley. We’ve had Ballaghmor Class from the word go and he’s a top class horse. Its the biggest and most difficult four star to win and means the world to me”.
