Bird Flu Confirmed at TwinLakes Theme Park
Bird flu has been reported in poultry and captive birds at the Twinlakes theme park in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. DEFRA, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, has identified the strain as H5N8 and has put 3 and 10 kilometres Temporary Control Zones in place.
The remaining birds are to be humanely culled to prevent the spread of the outbreak. The birds of prey are in a secure accommodation on a different part of the site. Controlled access is in force and these birds are looked after by different people to those who care for the poultry and captive birds. All will be subject to regular inspections and testing.
All of the Twinlakes theme park is under restriction and poultry and mammals are not to be allowed to be moved from the site.
Avian flu, also known as bird flu, is infectious that spreads among birds. In rare cases it can infect humans. H5N8 has not infected any humans worldwide to date.
