VJ Day 75th Anniversary at Oakham Church

Today, 15th August 2020, a two minute silence was held to mark VJ Day 75th Anniversary at Oakham church.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic only the Lord Lieutenant and Rutland High Sheriff took part. As the Lord Lieutenant explained, because of social distancing rules it seemed the only sensible thing to do. The two of them representing Rutland residents veterans, and serving armed forces.

Revd. Stephen Griffiths, Dr. Sarah Furness, and Richard Cole Esq.

After a speech by Dr Furness the names of those from Oakham who perished out there, prayers were read out. The church bells rang out as the wreaths were laid and then a two minutes silence obeyed.

Two minutes silence and wreath laying

It was on this day seventy five years ago that Japan surrendered bringing the Second World War to and end after six years of conflict.

Following the small but significantly important ceremony at All Saints church, The Lord Lieutenant and High Sheriff went up to Preston to hear the bells peal.
